The Five Tenets of Taekwondo

Courtesy:

It starts with the bow of respect to seniors followed by a “Yes Sir” or “Yes Ma’am”, and the bow is also extended to fellow students. This show of courtesy permeates all areas of life, as students learn to compliment and show gratitude to all deserving with no thought of reciprocity.

Integrity:

The “silent tenet” that students embody internally. This tenet is on display when students practice when no one is watching and train as hard as possible while on the dojang floor. Only the student knows his or her own limits, in Taekwondo and in all areas of life.

Perseverance:

In times of adversity and discouragement, the student of Taekwondo will overcome and remain dedicated to his or her training and advancement. This will happen in spite of potential envy or criticism from others, a sign of the truly dedicated martial artist.

Self-Control:

The student of martial arts must remain disciplined on and off the dojang floor, having the wisdom and maturity to hold one’s temper. Stopping a kick or a punch just before reaching the target during free-sparring is the greatest manifestation of self-control.

Indomitable Spirit:

The cornerstone of the previous four tenets, the student of Taekwondo must always stand up for what is right no matter what the situation or how great the cost. This spirit creates an attitude of confidence, improved self-esteem, and unwavering perseverance.
